New Apartment Building Adds to Roxborough Development

4136-mitchell-stRoxborough is one of the unique working class neighborhoods in the northwest section of Philadelphia.  Like much of the northwest, it has been seeing new development in recent years.  One such development is planned for Mitchell Street, at 4136 Mitchell Street exactly.  It is a midrise apartment building being developed by Main Street Development and designed by KCA Architecture.

This building will be six stories and 71 feet tall, but will also have a basement level with apartments, revealed by a steep hill.  The whole building will have 72 rental apartment units and a small fresh fruit market on the first floor, with its entrance on Mitchell Street, at the request of the neighborhood groups.  The building will have a setback in the back above the second floor, also at the request of neighbors living in the two-story rowhomes behind.  There will be ten parking spaces along the side and 24 bicycle parking spaces within the building.  The exterior will have wood panels, metal panels, concrete, and brick.  The first and second levels will have a stone façade and small planters at the corners above the second level.  The windows on the first and second floors will be a double height and there will be three-story bays above the second floor.  There will be a small pocket park off of Mitchell Street and an interior courtyard.  The upper floors will have a view of Center City, in the distance, and of the hills of the surrounding neighborhoods.

The northwestern section of Philadelphia will continue to see developments like this.  Manayunk and East Falls are seeing apartment development along the Schuylkill water front, Chestnut Hill and Mt. Airy are seeing apartment and retail development on Germantown Avenue, and Germantown, itself, is starting to see revitalization and new development.  Roxborough is, also, starting to see new apartment development, and population increase, and 4136 Mitchell Street is a part of that.
