East Kensington Sees Further Development
East Kensington has been undergoing a development boom similar to the booms in neighboring South Kensington, Northern Liberties, and Fishtown. East York Street runs through East Kensington and has had several vacant lots, but now those vacant lots are being bought up and developed into mostly residential properties. One such vacant lot is at 1836 East York Street, at the intersection of York and Jasper Streets. Locale Development has bought that lot and is planning to build a new apartment building at the site. The new building is designed by Kore Architecture.
1836 East York Street will be five stories and will have nineteen rental units. The units will be mostly two-bedroom units, with a few one-bedroom units on the first floor. The first floor would, also, have a 1,500 square foot retail space, with window frontage on both York and Jasper Streets. The building will have an elevator and a roof deck on top for the residents. There will be some green space on the side. The exterior would have white metal panels and wooden slats between some windows.
East Kensington has come a long way from the days when it had a lot of vacant land and little interest from developers. Like it’s surrounding Kensington and River Ward neighborhoods, it is now one of the most popular neighborhoods for new development and continues to evolve into a residential neighborhood popular with creative professionals.
